GC First Responders Stair Challenge 2024
Event Overview
The 2024 Rhapsody Stair Challenge on the Gold Coast was a thrilling event, rich in community spirit and purpose. Traditionally exclusive to firefighters, this 41-floor, 750-step climb supports efforts to combat the elevated cancer risk firefighters face due to frequent exposure to smoke and hazardous materials. This year, 100 first responders undertook the challenge, raising funds for firefighter cancer research and awareness.
The Firefighters' Climb
The first climbers to take the stairs at 7 a.m. included Tanya Langhorne, Emma Richardson, and Stephen McDermott, each wearing 20 kg vests as they began the first of three ascents, cheered on by an enthusiastic crowd. The atmosphere was electric—buzzing with excitement, camaraderie, and pure joy—as the firefighters powered through their climb.
Stair Climbing Australia Joins the Challenge
For the first time, members of the general public, including Stair Climbing Australia (SCA) members, were welcomed to participate. Representing SCA were Amber Thompson, Kye Weiss, Janet Goodwin, Tee Reid, Marina Whittle, Danielle Di Rosa, Lyndell Murray, Maria Pia Piemontese, Marcus and Benji Burgess, Frank Cervi and Alan Wright The chance to join this exclusive event added a new layer of excitement for SCA climbers, who took on the stairs alongside their firefighter heroes.
An Untimed Climb for Fun
A unique highlight of this year's event was an optional, untimed second climb, which many SCA members embraced, enjoying the stairwell at a more relaxed pace filled with laughter and camaraderie. Observing the firefighters climbing in full gear, which weighs about 25 kg, left participants in awe—an incredible feat showcasing their dedication.
Steve the Therapy Dog Joins the Fun
A special guest at this year’s event was Steve the therapy dog, who stole the hearts of everyone present. Steve was in his element, receiving endless pats and affection before his climb, in the stairwell, and even after he finished. His gentle presence added warmth and joy, as climbers and supporters alike showered him with love throughout the day. Steve's participation was a reminder of the supportive, uplifting spirit that makes the Rhapsody Stair Challenge such a unique and memorable experience.Celebration on the Rooftop
The event culminated on the rooftop with breathtaking views of the Gold Coast, where participants gathered to celebrate and reflect on the day’s achievement. One level down, they received certificates, goodie bags, and professional photos as mementos of the day.

An outdoor celebration followed with a true Aussie touch—a sausage sizzle! Here, presentations honored top climbers, with SCA’s Amber Thompson and Marcus Burgess taking first place in the men’s and women’s categories, respectively.
